A. Dementia Social Support Center and Toll-Free Helpline
Since 2002, TADA has set up a national toll-free hotline service, providing consultation services such as
dementia care skills, social welfare resources, family support services, medical information, and
dementia case services. Services such as counseling, interviews, referrals, and assistance are also
provided according to the needs of families with dementia.
The hotline is serving more than 7,000 inquiries per year.
In addition, TADA has established a social support network to integrate and update dementia resources, so
that people in need can click on the latest information online at any time. To ensure that every people
with dementia can receive adequate social support and services during and after the diagnosis. Through
the effective use of social resources, it is expected to reduce the pressure and impact of the disease
on patients and their families and assist families in coping with the disease and the adjustment of the
course of the disease.
Always Remember You
Since 2008, TADA has held "Always Remember You" at a fixed time and place from March to December every
year and arranged special lectures and social resource exhibitions for the needs of family members with
dementia, to improve family care skills and enhance social resources. In addition, there will be an hour
of family support group after the lecture. Family members can share their caring experiences, express
their emotions, and gain support from their peers through the group.
B. Family of Wisdom(FOW)
The number of people with dementia in Taiwan is increasing rapidly. In the absence of drugs to cure
dementia, most people with dementia tend to retreat at home, and their families are also heavily
burdened. To meet the needs of family members, TADA has created a new service model for dementia, Family
of Wisdom, in 2011 with the concept of family. People with dementia can participate in various favorite
activities (karaoke, mahjong, chess, calligraphy, painting, etc.) in this safe and comfortable home
environment full of nostalgic atmosphere, while family members can share their caring experiences with
other caregivers.
"This is my second home," said one of the caregivers. This service can relieve the physical and mental
stress of long-term caregivers and form a mutual support network. This service serves 26 groups of
families annually.
Memory Café
The purpose of the lecture is to provide the public, dementia patients, and their families with correct
dementia care knowledge and resources. At the same time, it is an opportunity for different family
caregivers and people with dementia to get to know and communicate with each other. In addition, we will
invite senior family members to share their care experiences in the lecture to enhance the sense of
meaning and inner strength of the family members. We also hope that with the help of such community
lectures, the community could tolerate and accept people with dementia and build a dementia-friendly
society.
C. House of Memories
Young-onset dementia is typically defined as those that people with dementia under 65. It is estimated
that there are 11,310 people with dementia in Taiwan between the ages of 45 and 64. A key differential
between senile and younger onset dementia is that young people with dementia are in the active phase of
their lives, the complexity of the disease is much higher, and the degradation rate is much faster.
Understandably, due to the degenerative nature of this condition, diagnosis can be extremely challenging
to process and except for patients, family, and social care.
For this reason, in 2010, TADA began to provide family services for people with young-onset dementia. In
2016, we established ‘House of Memories’, holding a great variety of different activities specifically
for younger onset dementia such as sensory stimulation, cognitive activities, exercising group, etc. We
also help the family face up to this disease, to prepare them for the degenerative nature of this
condition.
Our goal is to promote the life quality of patients and families, as well as bring them warmth and
sunshine.
D. Young Coffee
Every Saturday, House of Memories will be turned into a coffee shop from the place that provides service for
younger onset dementia and family member. The coffee shop is serviced by a group of younger onset dementia.
We try our best to make the impossible possible. Regain the value of life in the corner of their lives and
let the professionals and the public value the ability of people living with dementia.
E. Dementia Advisory Group
Taiwan Dementia Advisory Group (TDAG) is established in 2019. It is composed of people with dementia and
caregivers who can recognize and express themselves. The purpose is to empower people living with
dementia and their care partners to express their experiences and perspectives, raise community
awareness and change social attitudes, and advocate care services and policy for themselves and by
themselves.
The group holds a regular monthly meeting to share their experiences, insight, and suggestion and
highlight issues that are important to people affected by dementia. The topics are covered by monitoring
the implementation of national plan, dementia-friendly facility and service, dementia care and long-term
care, financial safety, wandering and getting lost issues, etc.
Furthermore, TDAG is also involved in a range of awareness-raising work and activities to eliminate
stigma and improve the understanding of dementia, including joining the World Alzheimer's Event, talking
about their experiences publicly, participating in media interviews, designing the dementia-friendly
calendar etc.
F. Dementia Friendly Taiwan
TADA launched Dementia Friendly Stores in 2013 and continues to connect chain stores
to build a Dementia Friendly Network across the country. After that, TADA started to launch Dementia
Friendly Clinics, Dementia Friendly Churches, and Dementia Friendly Organizations. In addition, TADA
published the "Dementia Friendly Community Guideline" and "Dementia Friendly Church Guideline" in 2016 and
2017. Since 2019, TADA has worked in dementia-friendly workplaces and has published workplace guidelines.
Also, TADA works in many different fields like Banking, MRT, Bus, Police, etc. In 2021, TADA has begun to
run a network of guardians of dementia. Neighborhood helps each other so that the missing people who are
living with dementia can be reunited with their families as soon as possible. TADA has launched a SOP
template for the chief of the village to build up their own SOP.
